2017 Journey to the Sun

With Journey to the Sun, I explored the life journey of Vincent van Gogh. The artwork is an abstract interpretation of the route he traveled from Zundert to Auvers-sur-Oise.

The starting point is a passage from Van Gogh’s letters to Theo, in which he compares the stars to destinations on a map. As I drew, a line emerged connecting the places where he lived and worked.

The route was translated into a digital vector and created as a spatial brass sculpture using waterjet cutting. The reverse side is finished with fluorescent paint, symbolizing the sun. Depending on the light, a second image appears and the sculpture changes in appearance.

The line represents not only Vincent van Gogh’s life journey, but also invites viewers to reflect on their own. Which places have shaped your life? Which route tells your story?

As part of this series, I published the travel booklet The Journey of Vincent van Gogh - In the Footsteps of Vincent, combining excerpts from Van Gogh’s letters with the places he visited throughout his life.

I also developed a Van Gogh Based Art Box featuring a silk 5-in-1 Tunic, a matching belt, the travel booklet and a certificate of authenticity.

More about this art series can be found in the artist’s book True Blue.
