During the lockdown, my practice was forced to move into my home. Exhibitions were put on hold, encounters disappeared, and the way people connected with one another changed. During this period, I created four works, each responding from a different perspective to what was happening around me.
Neon Heart emerged from messages by doctors working in intensive care and the human need to be there for one another. For Victory, I wrote to world leaders calling for international cooperation in response to the coronavirus. Their different responses became part of the work. This led to Unity, in which connection and cooperation are central, even when people are physically separated. In Freedom, freedom subsequently took on a different meaning: not only as something physical, but also as social and mental space.
Together, the works form a movement from care and loss towards cooperation, connection and freedom.
